Late 1990s

The connection to the company

Larry Page and Sergey Brin were Stanford PhD students building a search engine, and brainstorming a name for it. They wanted something that reflected their mission: organizing a seemingly infinite amount of data on the internet.

The idea

The inspiration

They chose "googol" — a 1 followed by 100 zeros — to signal exactly how vast that ambition was. A name as large as the problem.

1997

The typo

While checking domain availability during a brainstorm, someone registered google.com by mistake. Page and Brin liked the misspelling even better. It stuck — and "googol," the actual number, quietly got left behind.

Now

GOOGOL comes back for what's owed to it

Reclaimed onchain — with an automatic reward loop attached, so the forgotten name finally pays out something.
